The NZ vs IND 3rd T20I result was as one-sided as a 199-run chase can possibly be. India beat New Zealand by six wickets at Wellington on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, chasing down 199 in just 13.2 overs to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The win, sealed with 40 balls to spare, was built on one of the great T20I innings: Abhishek Sharma smashed 113 off 38 balls, reaching his hundred in only 35 deliveries, while teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blazed 45 in a record-breaking opening stand.

Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Wellington ground, backing his bowlers to use the long straight boundaries and short square boundaries. For a while, that call looked debatable. New Zealand, led by Daryl Mitchell, posted a total that would win most T20 internationals. It simply ran into an Indian batting line-up operating at a different speed.

NZ vs IND 3rd T20I scorecard: Mitchell's 89* not enough

New Zealand finished on 198 for 3 in their 20 overs. Finn Allen gave the hosts a fast start, and Daryl Mitchell, who reached his fifty in 26 balls, finished unbeaten on 89 off 52 deliveries. Mitchell slowed after his fifty, scoring 35 off his last 26 balls, but Bevon Jacobs kept the innings moving with an unbeaten 39 off 23 balls in an unbroken 75-run stand off 48 balls for the fourth wicket.

India's bowlers adjusted well after a brisk start. Nitish Kumar Reddy showed the way in the ninth over, dismissing Allen for 40 with a full, straight ball that the opener could not clear the long straight boundary. Arshdeep Singh finished with 1 for 33, Axar Patel took 1 for 36 and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed 1 for 38, as India dragged the scoring back with fuller lengths and a touch of reverse swing.

Abhishek Sharma 113: fifty in 15 balls, hundred in 35

The chase began with 26 runs off the first over, bowled by Jacob Duffy, and it never slowed down. Sooryavanshi, promoted to open the innings, and Abhishek took New Zealand apart in the powerplay, reaching their fifty in just 2.2 overs and their hundred in exactly five overs. The opening stand was worth 133 runs in only 7.1 overs, by which point the contest was effectively over.

Abhishek was the dominant partner, and then some. He reached his fifty in 15 balls and his fourth T20I hundred in 35 balls, finishing with 113 off 38 balls, including nine fours and 11 sixes. It was not quite his fastest T20I hundred — he had scored a 30-ball ton against Afghanistan in Delhi — but the control and range of hitting on show in Wellington, square of the wicket on both sides, made it one of the finest innings of his young career. He was eventually caught by Glenn Phillips off Kyle Jamieson, with India needing only 21 runs at that stage.

There was a brief wobble at the end, with Sanju Samson (18) and Shreyas Iyer falling when India were one hit away from victory, but Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir were unbeaten when Naman Dhir hit the winning boundary off Jamieson. Jamieson finished with 2 for 45, Matthew Fisher took 1 for 23 and Mitchell Santner claimed 1 for 17, but no bowler other than the New Zealand captain escaped heavy punishment.

Records broken in Wellington

The numbers from the chase tell their own story. India's 118 for no loss in the powerplay is a record in men's T20I cricket, and their hundred in five overs was the fastest team hundred in T20I history. The fifty in 2.2 overs equalled the joint-fastest team fifty where ball-by-ball data is available. Chasing 199 in 13.2 overs also left India with 40 balls unused, the second-most balls remaining in a successful chase of 190 or more in T20I history.

For New Zealand, the defeat continues a difficult pattern in this series. India have now hit seven 20-plus overs across the three matches; New Zealand have none. The gap is not just about power-hitting, either. India's batters repeatedly made room, targeted the short square boundaries and were prepared to hit good balls, while New Zealand's attack had no answer once the openers were set.

What the 3-0 lead means, and what comes next

The series win is India's third in a row on New Zealand soil in T20Is, following the 5-0 win in 2020 and the 1-0 win in 2022. More importantly for this tour, it was sealed with two matches still to play, giving India room to test combinations ahead of the ODI leg that follows. Sooryavanshi's promotion to open, and his success in the role, is one experiment that has already paid off handsomely.

New Zealand, meanwhile, must now play for pride and for answers. Mitchell Santner remains their most reliable bowler, and Mitchell's form with the bat is a positive, but the hosts need early wickets and a way to slow Abhishek down if the remaining matches are to be competitive. The 4th T20I takes place on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Eden Park, Auckland, starting at 12:30 PM IST, with the 5th T20I to follow on Sunday, November 1, at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
